Maktau Eco-Friendly Paper Factory
To enable locals to receive an economic income while preserving their natural resources, we supported the project of the recycled paper factory in elephant dung.
The production of this innovative paper is 100% natural, made with the energy of the sun and wind. The different articles are used in French schools as part of plastic arts teaching.
The process of creating recycled paper
The droppings are washed in warm water to remove impurities. Then they are boiled for six hours to sterilize them and make them more flexible. The recycled paper is also boiled. The droppings are then mixed with the recycled paper (in a ratio of 1:1), then the whole thing is pounded in a mortar. The binder is made by adding 15-20 liters of water and 300 ml of wood glue. The amount of binder added to the paper pulp affects the thickness of the final product: the more binder is added, the thicker the paper. The preparation is then placed on a wire mesh frame to allow the water to drain.
The mount is carefully removed so as not to damage the edges and the wire mesh is turned over to place the paper on the work board. The last excess water is removed with a sponge and the paper is left to dry. The following products are made from paper: A4 sheets, photo frames, photo albums, notebooks, postcards with envelopes and bookmarks.
Most of these items are available in small and large formats. As for the production of paper in different colours, the results are still mediocre at the moment. At this time, different colours are obtained by varying the proportions when mixing the excrement with the colour of the recycled paper. Some products are decorated with a simple stencil.

LES PRODUITS DE L’ATELIER DE PAPIER DU SANCTUAIRE DES ÉLÉPHANTS DE MWALUGANJE KENYA
Pour bien comprendre le procédé de fabrication nous vous initions au processus de production, dont voici quelques témoignages.
Le Procédé
Le Matériel : déjections des éléphants, papier recyclé, colle
Les déjections sont lavées à l’eau tiède pour enlever les impuretés. Puis elles sont bouillies pendant six heures pour les stériliser et les rendre plus souples. Le papier recyclé est également bouilli. Les déjections sont mélangées ensuite avec le papier recyclé (dans un rapport de 1:1), puis le tout est pilé dans un mortier. On fabrique le liant en additionnant 15-20 litres d’eau et 300 ml de colle à bois. La quantité de liant ajoutée à la pâte à papier joue sur l’épaisseur du produit final : plus on additionne du liant, plus le papier est épais. La préparation est ensuite posée sur un cadre grillagé afin de permettre à l’eau d’égoutter.
La monture est enlevée délicatement pour ne pas abîmer les bords et le grillage est retourné pour poser le papier sur la planche de travail. On enlève avec une éponge les derniers excès d’eau puis on laisse sécher le papier. Avec le papier on fabrique les produits suivants : des feuilles format A4, des cadres photos, des albums photos, des cahiers de notes, des cartes postales avec enveloppes et des marques pages.
La plupart de ces objets sont disponibles en petit et en grand format. En ce qui concerne la fabrication du papier de différentes couleurs, pour le moment les résultats sont encore médiocres. A cette date on obtient des couleurs différentes en variant les proportions lors du mélange des déjections avec la couleur du papier recyclé. Certains produits sont décorés avec un simple pochoir.

Les frais d’expédition sont en plus, ils comprennent l’emballage, la manutention et les frais de port.

Patrols with the rangers
For over 10 years, the association has been investing its efforts in the LUMO sanctuary, bordering Tsavo Park, to support rangers in their mission to fight poaching.
Support for patrols, wildlife data collection, equipment and base camp maintenance, our volunteers have regularly contributed to the life of the sanctuary and the protection of animal life.
An agro-ecological vegetable garden to tackle the drought
This project, conducted jointly with students from Voi TTNP, aims to improve sustainable production of crops and animal products. The specific objectives are:
– Use the farm to disseminate knowledge on transformative agriculture to farmers and students by adopting agroecology.
– Create a microclimatic environment to help mitigate climate impacts.
– Adopt production diversification.
